“Short-and-Suite” is a recital by cellist Benjamin Louwersheimer, that offers a vibrant journey through a diverse collection of works for the solo cello on Oct. 22, 7pm at United Commons Church, Victoria. As a curious artist himself, Benjamin seeks to engage the curiosity of his audiences by sharing the contextual details of his programs in short talks throughout each half of the concert.
The first half of the program begins in the Baroque era featuring works by Domenico Gabrielli, J.S. Bach, and George Phillip Telemann, and explores the historical context around these works from the past. The second half moves forwards in time to revive the oft forgotten musical eclecticism displayed in the concerts in the 19th and 20th centuries through Benjamin’s unique creation of a “Composite Suite”. The “Composite Suite” is a historically inspired curation of solo cello music that resembles the elements of a baroque suite and recreates the musical diversity of an early 20th century concert.
More than just a concert, “Short-and-Suite” evokes the intimate and dynamic atmosphere of historical recitals, inviting audiences to experience the cello’s rich tradition in a fresh, modern context. This event promises an engaging exploration of the instrument’s expressive possibilities, uniting the past and present through a unique performance with engaging storytelling for all audiences.
A Q&A session with Benjamin will be conducted following the show, during which audience members will have the opportunity to ask him questions.
To experience this concert, please come to United Commons Church, Victoria for Oct. 22, 2025, at 7pm. Admission is by donation (suggested amount $20).
